Alaska Occupational Safety and Health Information

According to OSHA, Alaska operates its own worker safety and health program under a plan by the U.S. Department of Labor. This program provides safety and health protections to most private sector workers, as well as state and local government employees within Alaska.

Alaska State Plan

Alaska operates the Alaska Occupational Safety and Health Program (AKOSH) through the Department of Labor. AKOSH has adopted most federal OSHA standards. However, there are a limited number of state-specific standards that remain in effect, including Petroleum Refining and Petroleum Drilling & Production. Alaska’s logging code is not significantly different from federal OSHA's logging standard.

Federal recordkeeping and reporting requirements have been adopted by AKOSH, with the exception that the state requires notification when one or more employees require hospitalization. Alaska’s reporting requirements also provide for employers operating on a seasonal basis.
