MSHA requires all new miners at Part 46 mines to complete 24 hours of safety education within 90 days of starting work. Part 46 applies to the following surface mining operations:

This training is required for miners, construction workers, independent contractors and supervisors. It is not necessary for visitors, delivery employees, scientists, customers or most maintenance workers.

What You Get

After finishing all lessons and passing all quizzes, you can instantly download a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Certificate of Training (MSHA Form 5000-23). This certification demonstrates that you have fully satisfied the training requirements found in 30 CFR 46.5 and permits you to work in any Part 46 mining operation.

Course Topics

This all-in-one training program contains 33 lesson modules. You don’t have to complete all 24 hours of training before your first day. Below, you will find a list of the topics covered in this training, how long you can expect to study each subject, and the required schedule for your first 90 days of employment.

Course Testing Requirements

Each of the 33 lesson modules concludes with a brief quiz. If you fail a quiz, you can simply try again. You have unlimited attempts to pass each quiz. You are guaranteed to pass the course and earn your Certificate of Training.

How Long Is My MSHA Certification Valid?

Your certificate is valid for one year from the date of issue. Each year, you must complete an eight-hour refresher training program to continue working on a Part 46 mining site.

If your certification ever expires by more than two years, you must complete the initial 24-hour training course again to earn a new training certificate.
